PrimeTime2Go Brings Mobile TV To BlackBerry

Believe it or not, RIM's BlackBerry App World -- which is basically the App Store for BlackBerry smartphones -- has been ticking now for a solid month. Thus, it's fitting to see one of its most promising bits of software go live today. QuickPlay Media, a provider of mobile video, has just announced that its PrimeTime2Go premium mobile TV service is now available in the U.S. for the BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Curve 8900 handsets.

The service requires that users pay a monthly subscription fee to receive unrestricted and unlimited access to loads of mobile TV channels, including feeds from big networks such as ABC, Disney Channel, ESPN, CBS, ABC Family, Bravo, USA, Sci-Fi, The CW and Discovery Channel. Interested? Surf on over to the "Music and Video" category to get the download going, but be prepared to pay $7.99/month for the privilege -- oh, and you should know that quality will be awful if not within a 3G data area. Of note, the service is only available to AT&T and T-Mobile customers, but we could definitely envision this expanding out in the near future.

Shows include:
  • ABC: “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lost,” and “Desperate Housewives”
  • CBS: “CSI,” “NCIS,” “Harper’s Island” and “The Young and the Restless”
  • NBC: “The Office” and “Heroes”
  • ABC Family: “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” and “Greek”
  • ABC News: “World News with Charles Gibson,” “20/20,” and “Nightline”
  • Bravo: “Top Chef”
  • Discovery Channel: “Out of the Wild: The Alaska Experiment”
  • Disney Channel: “Hannah Montana,” and “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse”
  • Disney XD: “Aaron Stone,” “Phineas and Ferb,” and “Kid vs. Kat”
  • ESPN: “PTI,” “Around the Horn,” and “Game Up”
  • SCI FI: “Ghost Hunters International”
  • The CW: “90120” and “America’s Next Top Model”
  • TLC: “Jon & Kate Plus 8”
  • USA: “Monk”
  • Discovery Channel: “Shark Week”
  • Animal Planet: “Whale Wars”

Following the download of any selected program, which occurs in the background over Wi-Fi networks, subscribers will be able to watch their selection anytime and anywhere until the pre-determined viewing period expires. To enhance the experience, PrimeTime2Go includes several key features:

  • My Series: Enables consumers to select their favorite TV series and have new episodes automatically downloaded to their device soon after the original air date.
  • Pause and Resume: Allows consumers to pause a program, exit the application and then resume viewing from where they left off upon re-entering the service.
