Microsoft Windows Store Crosses 50,000 Apps Milestone
The number of apps is steadily rising, having more than doubled since the end of November, and increasing from a little more than 44,000 apps a month ago. As we head into summer, the pace of new apps to hit the Windows Store might accelerate even further. How so?
Microsoft recently announced a "Keep the Cash" campaign that, as of March 8th, started paying developers $100 for each app they develop for Windows 8 or Windows Phone 8. The incentive program pays virtual Visa card credit for up to 10 qualifying apps per store, which means a developer can earn up to $2,000 just by focusing his or her attention on Windows. It runs until June 30, 2013.
While this will lure developers on the software side, the other half of the equation is hardware. Last month, Microsoft teamed up with Best Buy to give consumers $100 off any touchscreen Windows 8 PC, and it wouldn't surprise us if more promotions emerged as we head into summertime.
