Microsoft CEO: Windows Slates Due Out By Christmas

Apple's iPad has been a huge success. There's just no way to deny that. Apple has raked in millions from being first to market with a "new" generation tablet that uses modernized software and a touch-friendly platform, and Microsoft has been scrambling ever since to match it. In fact, everyone has. Android tablets are coming to light as well, but the main issue is that hardly any tablets are out there yet. But they will be soon.

With the critical holiday season approaching, Microsoft has no intentions of missing their chance to rival the iPad this Christmas. CEO Steve Ballmer recently said that the world can expect Windows-based slates by Christmas. Here's the exact quote: "You'll see new slates with Windows on them. You'll see them this Christmas. Certainly we have done work around the tablet as both a productivity device and a consumption device." That was said to an audience at the London School of Economics, but he failed to elaborate beyond that with details.

It's hard to say what kind of form factors and specifications will follow these slates to market. We have heard in the past that there will be multiple screen sizes and multiple platforms, giving customers far more options than Apple. But is Windows 7 tailored to work well on a tablet? Will consumers choose Windows over the iPad? We can't wait for the Q4 sales figures to tell the story.
