LG G3 Lollipop Update 'Coming Soon'

Kudos are in order for LG Electronics. Why? LG last month began doling out Android 5.0 Lollipop updates to G3 handset owners in Europe, and starting soon, the South Korean electronics company will extend the same courtesy to G3 owners in the U.S. That will put G3 owners in select company -- less than 0.1 percent of Android handsets have Android 5.0 installed.

Android 5.0 came out nearly three months ago (early November of last year), yet it doesn't warrant an entry on Google's Android Developers Dashboard, as is the case with any version of the open source operating system will less than 0.1 percent distribution. That will change as the year goes on, but for now, Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.x-4.3) and KitKat (Android 4.4) are the two most popular major builds of Android at 46 percent and 39.1 percent, respectively, followed by earlier versions dating back to Froyo.

LG G3

Now about eight months old, the G3 still holds up well today, on paper and in practice. As a refresher, it sports a 5.5-inch Quad HD IPS display (2560x1440, 538ppi) powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at up to 2.5GHz and 3GB of DDR3 RAM. It also boasts 32GB of built-in storage expandable via microSD slot, 2.1MP front-facing camera, 13MP rear-facing camera with optical image stabilization and laser auto focus, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, NFC, 1W speaker with Boost Amp, and a removable 3,000 mAh battery.

The device ships with Android 4.4 KitKat, at least for now. Word that Lollipop is headed to the G3 comes straight from LG, which posted to Twitter that it's "coming soon."
