Jolla Smartphone Launch Imminent, Former Nokia Employees Soldier On
This fate of the OS formerly known as Meego was in jeopardy when Nokia launched and then immediately discontinued the N9, which was the only phone to run the OS. Then, Intel and Samsung got together and created a new OS based on Meego called Tizen. In the meantime, a group of scrappy Fins based the Sailfish OS on Meego, as well.
Jolla has a carrier, DNA, and it also has a nice-looking handset that has some of the same lines as Nokia handsets. It also features a removable plastic back so users can customize it a bit.
The specs on the phone aren’t earth-shattering, but it does feature a solid dual-core Qualcomm 1.4GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, a microSD slot, and 8MP/2MP rear- and front cameras. The 4.5-inch display has a resolution of 960x540, and the phone can supposedly run most Android apps, and it also has a number of Sailfish apps.
In a promo video, the phone and OS look very fine indeed. The Jolla phone costs about $513 USD.
