iPad 5 Spec Rumors Point To Thinner, Lighter More Powerful Apple Tablet
Apple surprised a lot of people when it unexpectedly launched a fourth generation iPad model at a press event largely focused on the iPad mini (and a few other product refreshes). However, the incremental upgrades -- faster processor, higher quality FaceTime camera, new Lightning connector -- add up to what could be considered an iPad 3S instead of an iPad 4 (Apple no longer users a numbering scheme to identify iPad models), so it's with a bit of a excitement that we look forward to a fifth generation iPad that will hopefully bring more to the tablet than its immediate predecessor.
As rumor has it, the iPad 5 will launch in the third quarter of this year. One of the first things users will notice is that the fifth generation iPad will be thinner and lighter than previous models courtesy of a battery that's been flattened by up to 30 percent. If the rumors are correct, you needn't stress about the smaller battery, as it's said to still provide 10 hours of run time.
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with KGI Securities, says the iPad 5 will also also sport a new A7X quad-core processor, giving it a much needed performance boost in light of all the quad-core Android tablets coming out.
"We think the tablet will, at 7.5-8.0mm, be 15 percent thinner than iPad 4. The new device will likely be about 500 grams, or some 25 percent lighter than iPad 4, run on an A7X processor, and sport cameras with similar specs to the iPad 4's (front HD, rear 5MP). The casing shape and color (silver and black) and narrow bezel design will be similar to the iPad mini's," Kuo said.
We won't have to wait very long to find out if all this is true. According to Kuo, Apple will begin mass producing and shipping the iPad 5 sometime between August and September.
