iOS Big In Japan, Android Dominance Grows In U.S.
From January through March in the U.S., Android has seen an 8.3% year-over-year increase in sales, giving it a hefty 57.6% market share. That gain came largely at the expense of iOS, which dipped 7.8% over the same time period. Black lost a bit of ground (down 0.2%) and Windows Phone did about the same (0.3%).

The Android gain/iOS loss picture looks the same across several other countries including Germany, Italy, China, and several EU countries, although iOS actually gained some ground in Great Britain, Spain, Australia, and--most notably--Japan, where it jumped 8.6% while Android fell 4.5%.
BlackBerry sales were either flat or down in every country except Australia, where it saw increased sales of 0.5%.
Outside of the U.S. and China where sales slipped 0.3% and 0.9% respectively, Windows Phone did gain market share in every other country. The problem is that the gains we qre relatively meager, ranging from 0.5% to 3.0%. Those would have been more encouraging numbers a year or more ago, but Windows Phone is now a mature platform that has undergone substantial updates.
Android and iOS of course more mature, and they’re both superb products, but it should be alarming to Microsoft that after all this time its mobile platform isn’t even a competitive #3 in most markets
There’s reason for optimism, we suppose, in a few markets, though. In countries where Android truly dominates, Windows Phone is creeping up on iOS. For example, in Germany iOS versus Windows Phone market share is 15.3% to 6.6%. In Spain it’s 7.6% to 3.0% (but trending in the wrong direction for Windows Phone), and Windows Phone actually enjoys a higher market share than iOS by a slim margin.
