Holy Crapple, Apple App Store Tops 300,000 Apps

Moboclix, which makes it their business to know everything there is to know about mobile applications, claims Apple's App Store now has over 300,000 apps. That number includes both free and paid apps, and is still an impressive number when you weed out all the fart apps, particularly when you consider the ambiguous approval process new software goes through before being added to the App Store.

Casting a wet blanket on that number, Fortune points out that a good chunk of those are inactive apps. In fact, Apple's App Store is home to more than 55,000 inactive apps, according to both 148apps and AppShopper, two other mobile software tracking firms. Both of these firms have the actual count of active apps sitting at a little under 280,000, or about 20,000+ shy of Moboclix's estimation.

Whatever the real number, that's till a lot of software being shuttled to iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad devices. That lead is dwindling, however, as Android now offers more than 113,000 apps, according to AndroLib.com.
