Google Announces Nexus 4 Smartphone and Nexus 10 Tablet
Well it wasn’t quite the glamorous announcement in New York City that we were expecting thanks to Hurricane Sandy, but Google did decide to unveil the new spate of products that it was (presumably) going to talk about at today’s cancelled event. The big news is that, as expected, Google has a Nexus 10 tablet and Nexus 4 smartphone.
LG is the manufacturer of the Nexus 4, and the phone features Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, a quad-core SnapDragon S4 processor, large 4.7-inch Gorilla Glass 2 display, 2GB of RAM, wireless charging capabilities, and micro USB and SlimPort HDMI ports. Google baked in Photo Sphere for taking 360-degree photos and Google Now, which has more cards than ever for predicting your needs and sending you reminders about the tasks and activities you have coming up.
Starting November 13th, the Nexus 4 will be available unlocked in the U.S., UK, Australia, France, Germany, Spain and Canada for $299 (8GB version) and $349 (16GB version). If you want a discount by signing a 2-year contract, T-Mobile offers the 16GB version for $199.
For its 10-inch tablet, the Nexus 10, Google partnered with Samsung on the hardware side. The tablet features a Gorilla Glass 2 display boasting 2560x1600 resolution and purports to offer 9 hours of video playback and 500 hours on standby. Under the hood is a dual-core A10 processor, a Mali T604 GPU, and 2GB of RAM. There are front-facing stereo speakers to optimize the movie-watching experience, 1.9MP and 5MP front- and rear-facing cameras, micro USB and micro HDMI ports, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The Nexus 10 doesn’t cost much more than the Nexus 4, running $399 (16GB) or $499 (32GB). It’s coming on November 13th in the same countries as the Nexus 4, as well as in Japan.
The Nexus 7 tablet line is getting some love, as well; in addition to the 16GB and 32GB WiFi versions many already know and love, Google will launch a 32GB version with HSPA+ mobile capabilities, unlocked, for $299.
Finally, here’s some welcome news for our friends across the pond: when these devices launch, Google Play will be available in Europe. Even better, there’s a music match feature coming, so Google will scan your collection and automatically add your tracks to your online library so you don’t have to upload them.
