GeForce 9800 To Be Quiet?

We reported yesterday that NVIDIA has taped out their next generation GPU, the 9800, or so the rumor goes.

Now we’re picking up new details, such as the the rumor that the new cards are said to run much quieter than current generation cards such as the 8800 Ultra.

As with all rumors, take this with a grain of salt until we actually get a card to review and give you the straight scoop.
“As it turns out, in preliminary audio tests, the new card is more silent than not just 8800Ultra, but it is also less noisy than 8800GTX. It turns out that we are slowly approaching the era of silent monsters - computers that will emit less noise that your typical 15.4-inch laptop.”
While it seems like we might be a ways away from having a powerful desktop that makes less noise than a laptop, it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

The bigger question is what the new card will be called.  The tentative name of 9800 that has cropped up recently may not be entirely accurate, especially as we haven’t seen the 8900 moniker used nor do we have any technical details about the features other than its lowered noise levels.

So what do you think?  Is this the 8900 or the 9800?
