EA Cuts More Jobs, Shuts Down PopCap Vancouver and Quicklime Studios, Total Number of Casualties Unknown

Electronic Arts is slashing more jobs yet again, and to make matters worse (or at least more annoying), the company isn’t releasing many details about the who, what, where, and when of those layoffs. Instead of coming right out and saying publicly what’s happening, EA posted this incredibly vague “organizational update” on its blog:

In recent weeks, EA has aligned all elements of its organizational structure behind priorities in new technologies and mobile. This has led to some difficult decisions to reduce the workforce in some locations. We are extremely grateful for the contributions made by each of our employees – those that are leaving EA will be missed by their colleagues and friends.

These are hard but essential changes as we focus on delivering great games and showing players around the world why to spend their time with us.

Unofficial reports indicate that PopCap Vancouver and Quicklime Studios were a focus of the latest round of layoffs and are in fact being shut down. Game Informer says that EA is shutting down its EA Partners program, which offered a mechanism for working with independent publishers.

It’s possible that all of the above are included in the job cuts; Kotaku’s sources indicate that as much as 10% of EA’s total workforce of about 9,000 is on the chopping block. In any case, it appears as though several hundred more EA workers are on the street while the company flails around trying to regain its equilibrium.
