Case-Mate "Hug" Brings Wireless Charging To Apple iPhone

Wireless charging, believe it or not, isn't really new any more. It has been around in one form or another for years now, and Palm's Touchstone brought the technology firmly into the smartphone field. Powermat also has adapters that enable pretty much any smartphone to benefit from contact charging, but Case-Mate is hoping to step things up even further.


The "Hug" case just might be the first iPhone case to emerge in quite some time that demands attention. The Mophie Juice Pack Air was one of those show-stopping cases (as it provided a built-in extended battery), and now this case has stepped in to carry the crown. Serving two purposes (a protective shell and a wireless charging solution), this case allows you to charge up your iPhone by simply laying it down on the Hug Pad. Power is transferred via contact from the Pad to the Case, but you'll be paying a steep premium for being able to ditch the dock connecting power cable. $99.99 seems somewhat steep given just how bulky the case is, but if you really hate keeping up with your AC adapter, maybe it's worth it.

How does it work?

Connect the Hug charging pad to a standard ac power source, then place your phone in the wireless Hug charging case. Second, place the Hug case with the phone in it on the charging pad. Magnets in the pad and case automatically create a safe, charging field that wirelessly charges your phone.
