AT&T To Launch 1Gbps Fiber Network In Austin, Texas
If you know much of anything about AT&T, you'd know that Texas is a pretty important state for the company. Austin, in particular, is a stronghold for AT&T, and it just so happened to be invaded by Google this week. You see, Google Fiber is expanding into Austin from Kansas City, but it looks like Google won't be alone down in Texas. AT&T has also announced plans this week to roll out a fiber network to Austin, Texas residents. Once complete, it'll be capable of delivering broadband at 1Gbps -- many, many times faster than DSL and cable offerings.
AT&T’s expanded fiber plans in Austin anticipate it will be granted the same terms and conditions as Google on issues such as geographic scope of offerings, rights of way, permitting, state licenses and any investment incentives. There's no word on what pricing will be offered, nor when it'll be available, but we sure hope this is only the start for AT&T's fiber plans. The country could definitely use more fiberhoods.
