Atari To Bring 'Vault' Of Arcade Classics Like Missile Command, Asteroids, Tempest And More To Steam

Can't get enough of quarter munchers of yore? Well, if you don't mind being strapped to a computer, you might want to pay attention to a new mega compilation that Atari will be releasing this spring. Called Atari Vault, this compilation will feature a treasure trove of 100 classic titles, including Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, Tempest, Warlords, and many more.

At the moment, some details on Atari Vault are scarce, such as pricing, screenshots and the full list of games. But, it's not hard to get excited about how epic this collection could be. The press release notes that this title will feature an "upgraded" user interface, so we can hope that will freshen things up a bit. Could there be anything cooler than a first-person interface inside of a virtual arcade? We might not get so lucky given there are 100 games on offer, but one can dream.

You might be thinking, "oh yeah, arcade re-releases - so original!", but you haven't heard the best part. With this release, Atari is adding multiplayer capabilities. It was noted that some of this will be local play, but we'd imagine that the bulk of this functionality will be simply tied to leaderboards, allowing friends to outdo their friends in whichever title they fancy. Given that this appears to be a Steam exclusive, it would stand to reason that Atari Vault could have achievements to work towards, and perhaps even Steam trading cards to earn.

If you happen to be attending PAX South next weekend, you should hit up the Atari booth and give Atari Vault a vigorous test there. While there, you can also check out RollerCoaster Tycoon World for the PC, and Pridefest, for iOS too. Hot-diggity.
