ASUS Already Supports Intel Thunderbolt 2 With Z87 Motherboard

We just heard about the second generation of Intel’s Thunderbolt technology, Thunderbolt 2 (with a new “Falcon Ridge” controller), but already ASUS has jumped in and become the first motherboard manufacturer to be Thunderbolt 2-certified.

The ASUS Z87-Deluxe/Quad has two Thunderbolt 2 ports, in addition to HMDI, three PCIe 3.0 slots, 10 SATA 6Gbps ports, 8 USB 3.0 ports (with USB 3.0 Boost), and 8 USB 2.0 ports. It also Dual Intelligent Processors 4 for dynamically tuning performance and cooling, an NFC Express accessory, free WiFi GO! and NFE Remote companion apps, and more.

At a time when plenty of motherboards don’t have any Thunderbolt ports at all, this one from ASUS has two second-gen ports. Perhaps it’s jumping the gun somewhat, but it’s hard not to smile about having two 20Gbps ports on one board, which enables 4K video and gives users the ability to daisy chain up to 12 devices simultaneously.
