Apple Touts One Million Mac App Store Downloads in First Day
It only took 24 hours for Apple's newly opened Mac App Store to record over one million downloaded applications. That's impressive, not only because Apple just opened the doors yesterday, but also because it was achieved with a mere 1,000 apps.
"We're amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Developers have done a great job bringing apps to the store and users are love how easy and fun the Mac App Store is."
It certainly helps that Apple has more than a little experience with the app business model. The Mac App Store offers apps in Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity, Utilities, and other categories and includes both free and paid downloads. Apps are available for Snow Leopard users through Software Update as part of Mac OS X v10.6.6.
As for pricing, developers are free to set their own asking price and keep 70 percent of the sales revenue. Developers aren't charged for free apps and don't have to worry about hosting costs, credit card fees, or any other maintenance costs.
