Apple Cuts LG 5K And 4K Thunderbolt 3 Display Prices By 25 Percent

Part of the deal with the new MacBook Pro is that buyers have to go all-in with USB-C, a pricey proposition that can entail buying new peripherals and/or adapters. To help things along, Apple has issued a temporary price reduction on its USB-C adapters, along with USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 peripherals. On top of that, Apple just cut the price of its new 5K and 4K LG UltraFine Displays by more than 25 percent.

Starting with the lower resolution of the two, the LG UltraFine 4K Display is now priced at $542, down from its MSRP of $699.95. The 4K offering is a 21.5-inch display with a 4096x2304 resolution, P3 wide color gamut, and 500 cd/m2 brightness. It also has built-in speakers and comes with a single USB-C cable that provides up to 60W of charging power to the MacBook or MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 3 ports. Three downstream USB-C ports offer additional connectivity.

The 5K display is priced at $974, down from $1,299.95, and kicks things up a notch in both physical size and resolution—it sports a 27-inch panel with a 5120x2880 resolution. The 5K panel also boasts the same P3 wide color gamut and 500 cd/m2 brightness, along speakers and three downstream USB-C ports. However, it's capable of providing up to 85W of charging power and adds a built-in camera to the mix.

Apple just recently updated its MacBook Pro with thinner and lighter models than its predecessor. There's an optional Touch ID sensor that takes the place of the Function keys, which is arguably the biggest change, along with AMD Radeon Pro graphics on the 15-inch model. Depending on the specific SKU, connectivity consists of either two or four Thunderbolt-3 ports.

By only implementing USB-C connections on the MacBook Pro, most professionals will have to resort to using adapters for their gear, adapters that historically have not been all that cheap.

"We recognize that many users, especially pros, rely on legacy connectors to get work done today and they face a transition. We want to help them move to the latest technology and peripherals, as well as accelerate the growth of this new ecosystem. Through the end of the year, we are reducing prices on all USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 peripherals we sell, as well as the prices on Apple's USB-C adapters and cables," Apple said.

Most of the adapters still are not cheap, such as the USB-C Digital AV Multiport adapter that now costs $49, but it's at least better than the previous asking prices (which in this case was $69).

As for the LG monitors, the UltraFine 4K Display is available to purchase now and ships in 5-6 weeks, while the LG UltraFine 5K Display will be available in December.
