Amazon Lets Slip New Kindle Paperwhite, Starts Taking Pre-Orders
It's not clear if Amazon intended to launch its new Kindle Paperwhite today all along, or if it realized there are no do-overs on the Internet, so it might as well re-list the item and forge ahead. Either way, it's online now, and you can secure yours for $119 with Special Offers, or $139 without the homescreen ads.
There still isn't a press release announcing the new Kindle Paperwhite, though the product page reveals all the details you need to no. According to Amazon, the latest version is over 30 percent lighter than an iPad mini. It uses a new display technology that results in higher contrast and better reflectivity, and also has a next generation built-in light.
Other improvements include a 25 percent faster processor, better touch technology (19 percent lighter touch grid), and a bunch of software enhancements, such as Smart Lookup and Kindle Page Flip.
Any bets on how long it will take for it to be jailbroken?
After posting this, Amazon posted a press release officially introducing its second generation Kindle Paperwhite (and sixth generation Kindle).
"Kindle is the best-selling e-reader in the world for six years running," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. "No one is investing on behalf of readers or pushing the boundaries of hardware, software and content for readers like this team: the new Kindle Paperwhite has brand-new display technology, the next generation of our built-in light, a faster processor, plus all of the exclusive benefits of the Kindle ecosystem like Kindle MatchBook, Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, over 400,000 exclusive titles, Goodreads, Kindle Singles, Kindle Worlds, Kindle FreeTime, and much more."
The new Kindle Paperwhite weighs a mere 7.3 ounces, lasts up to 8 weeks on a single charge, has Facebook and Twitter integration, and doesn't require any setup -- it arrives pre-registered so you can turn it on and begin reading.
Look for the Wi-Fi version to ship on September 30; the Wi-Fi + 3G ($189) will be up for pre-order at a later date and begin shipping November 5.
