Verizon Expanding XLTE Network To Over 300 Markets For Better Performance
More elbow room is being created on 4G LTE networks operated by Verizon Wireless as the wireless carrier rolls out a technology upgrade to more than 300 markets. Called XLTE, Verizon's plan is to enhance its entire 4G LTE network spread across over 500 markets with the faster service by the end of the year.
Don't worry yourself if you've never heard of XLTE. This is a term Verizon invented and it really just refers to new wireless spectrum the company acquired a few years back. That's not to say there aren't some benefits and technological advantages.
XLTE Ready devices will automatically access both the 700MHz spectrum and the 1,700MHz AWS (Advanced Wireless Services) spectrum Verizon acquired in 2011. This effectively doubles the 4G LTE bandwidth, and even if your smartphone only operates on the 700MHz spectrum in XLTE markets, you'll benefit from a less congested network.
"The industry and tech world recognize this is a big deal, and we want consumers to know, too," said Ken Dixon, chief marketing officer of Verizon Wireless. "We continue to offer the very best network, bar none. Now, XLTE provides an even greater advantage to customers by doubling the 4G LTE bandwidth and providing faster peak speeds in cities coast to coast."
According to Verizon, more than 35 percent of all devices operating on its network can take advantage of the added capacity that AWS provides. It's mostly older handsets that can't see the new spectrum since Verizon wasn't using it prior to 2011. Phones such as the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, Motorola Moto X, and LG G2 are all XLTE-ready.
