Tesla Has Something With A “D” Up Their Sleeve, Shares Jump As Musk Tweets Of October 9th Unveil

A single letter of the alphabet has the Internet pondering what in the world is coming next from Tesla Motors. It's the letter "D," which Tesla Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elon Musk casually tossed in a vague Twitter post along with a date -- October 9, 2014 -- for the unveiling of whatever the "D" might be, as well as "something else." There's also a picture accompanying the post.

Comparisons to the Batmobile exiting the Batcave are inevitable, though don't expect a DC tie-in with whatever the D ends up being. A more likely scenario is that Tesla is getting ready to introduce the Model D, which would fall in line with the company's past naming schemes. There's already the Model S, an electric sedan that you can buy today, and Model X, which Tesla will launch sometime in the future.

If not the Model D, then what? There's no shortage of speculation on the web. The Wall Street Journal thinks Musk's Twitter post is referring to an equipment upgrade rather than a new vehicle. Why? In an interview with Musk just last month, the CEO told WSJ  that Tesla isn't working on any vehicles other than the ones that have already been announced. At the same time, he promised that Tesla would make "significant" product news.

Perhaps the D is referring to all-wheel drive, a feature that Jaguar only added to its luxury cars a few years ago to boost sales in snow laden areas. Or perhaps something else. Either way, a follow-up Twitter post only fueled additional speculation.

"I love the Internet. Comments had me literally ROFL. No, it wasn't intentional. Glad I didn't mention the other letter!," Musk tweeted.

Maybe the other letter is "M," in which case Tesla could be getting ready to unveil a dual-motor" feature, which Musk has already made a reference to in regards to the forthcoming Model X.
