Samsung Continuum Dual-Display Smartphone Comes To Verizon

It's hard to build a smartphone these days that truly stands out. Every so often, you'll see a new phone with a really strange design, but in most cases, things remain generally safe. That's largely because applications are designed to work with a specific screen size and a specific resolution (and aspect ratio), so straying too far from the magic formula could hurt the phone's appeal.

That hasn't stopped Samsung from introducing the wildest version of the Galaxy S to date, and it's coming soon to Verizon Wireless. Introduced this evening, the Samsung Continuum. The phone's name actually has a lot to do with the phone's design. Samsung is calling this the world’s first smartphone designed with a dedicated ticker display, which provides users with up-to-the-minute news, sports, finance and social networking updates for maximized multitasking. Basically, the phone has two displays, with the second being a tiny strip of pixels along the bottom meant to keep lots of important information available at a glance.

This marks the second Galaxy S phone to come to Verizon, with this version having a 3.4" touch screen (Super AMOLED), a customizable 1.8" Super AMOLED dedicated ticker display that streams customized information in real time and a 5MP camera. But for some reason, Android 2.1 was chosen as the operating system, despite the fact that Android 2.2 is the most modern and Android 2.3 will be released on developer Nexus One units by the end of the week. Basically, the phone's OS is already outdated, even before it goes on sale.

There's plenty of power here: a 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor is within, along with 3G support, 3G Mobile HotSpot capabilities, a grip sensor, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Stereo Bluetooth, support for corporate email, a 3.5mm headphone jack and an 8GB microSD card pre-installed. The Samsung Continuum will be available for order starting Nov. 11 in Verizon Wireless stores and online for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement and data package.
