Qualcomm Quiely Chops $100 Off Toq Smartwatch, Now Sells for $250
What do you do when the competition heats up in the niche market you're competing in? You lower the price! And that's exactly what Qualcomm has done, slashing $100 off the price of its Toq smartwatches, though the generous price cut came without any kind of announcement or ballyhooing. Nevertheless, you can now pick up either the Black or Limited Edition White Toq for $250 instead of $350.
Qualcomm will even pay for ground shipping. Apparently the chip maker is feeling the heat from new designs released at Mobile World Congress, including Samsung's Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, which are the first wearables to run Samsung's Tizen OS.
Spec-wise, the Toq isn't a bad device. It has a 1.55-inch capacitive touchscreen display with a 228x192 resolution (222 pixels per inch), 200MHz ARM Cortex M3 SoC, 512MB RAM, Bluetooth 3, and 240mAh battery. The Toq works with Android devices running 4.0.3 or higher (Jelly Bean and up preferred), though it lacks robust developer support and doesn't offer support for iOS, Windows Phone, or BlackBerry. Another knock against the Toq is that you have to physically cut the wristband to size, so follow the old adage of measuring twice and cutting once.
