Posterous Shutting Down To "Focus On Twitter" Come April 30

As it often goes, smaller startups tend to forget all about awesome parts of their business as soon as they're snapped up by larger companies. Even if the "larger company" used to be a "small startup" itself. When Sparrow got swallowed by Google, almost all of the innovation within Sparrow's own app came to a screeching halt. And now, Posterous looks to be saying goodbye to some of its core as it moves on to a world dictated by Twitter. You see, Posterous was purchased by Twitter around a year ago, after launching to much fanfare in 2008. The goal for the company was to make sharing photos and connecting on social networks easier. Naturally, that kind of mission statement makes it a perfect fit for Twitter.

However, there's a downside. On April 30th, Posterous.com will go dark, and its mobile apps will follow suit. The team will then shift to "focus 100% on Twitter." This means that as of April 30, Posterous Spaces will no longer be available either to view or to edit.

Existing users can still download backups of their Space, and the team is telling its consumers that WordPress and Squarespace offer importers that can move all of your content over to either service. Surely some will be sad to see it go, but such is life in the startup world.
