OnLive MicroConsole Ships For $99 With $10/Month Gaming Plan

Is there a future to online game streaming? Maybe. InstantAction was recently forced to shut their doors after their embedded gaming platform didn't catch on, but OnLive seems to be onto something. The idea of being able to plug a simple box into a broadband connection and then stream any major title available is definitely appealing, but we have a long way to go before consumers are willing to go over the expectations of needing a physical console nearby to play a game.

The MicroConsole, introduced this week, could go a long way to changing that perception though. The mini console is coming along with an attractive $9.99 per month flat-rate video game plan, which is titled "PlayPack." It's available today, but only in beta to OnLive Game System owners. It's expected to become available to all OnLive members on Jan. 15, 2011. OnLive will continue to offer its current free trials, 3- and 5-day rentals and Full PlayPass options for a la carte new-release games in addition to the new PlayPack flat-rate plan for access to a growing library of recent, indie and classic games.

The MicroConsole is also shipping today for $99, and it comes with a controller. The idea is to plug this box into your HDTV and have flat-rate access to all-you-can-play gaming. The PlayPack flat-rate plan will comprise more than 40 high-quality games when officially launched, incorporating major franchises immediately recognizable to any gamer. A sampling of the current PlayPack beta game library includes:

•Prince of Persia®, Ubisoft
•NBA® 2K10, 2K Sports
•Tomb Raider™: Underworld, Square-Enix
•F.E.A.R. 2, Warner Bros
•Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X.™, Ubisoft
•Unreal Tournament® 3, Epic
•Vin Diesel Wheelman™, Ubisoft
•LEGO® Batman™, Warner Bros
•Defense Grid® Gold, Hidden Path
•Saw, Konami
•Puzzle Chronicles, Konami
•King's Bounty: Armored Princess, Katauri Interactive
•Ninja Blade, From Software

Like all OnLive titles, PlayPack games play instantly on TVs, via the OnLive Game System, or on a PC or Mac® via a small browser download.
