Nokia N8 Reviewed in Russia, Found Wanting
For whatever reason, Nokia doesn't often dip its toes into the high-end smartphone waters, instead letting other manufactures -- like Apple, HTC, Motoroloa, etc. -- duke it out. But that isn't always the case, as evidenced by Nokia's new N8 handset, the company's first Symbian^3 device.
So what's the verdict? We haven't played with one ourselves, but according to Russian review site Mobile-Review.com (and Google Translate), "the feeling is that Nokia had settled in fairyland." We're positive there was something lost in translation there, but other comments were a bit more clear, though equally critical. In the end, Mobile-Review.com described the phone as little more than a polished version of what Nokia already offers, and even accused someone on the inside of intentionally trying to drag down the Nokia brand. Ouch.
Scathing review aside, the N8 ships with a 3.5-inch multitouch display, supports multitasking, and boasts a 12MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics. It can shoot 720p video and it appears that there's an HDMI port on the device, so you should be able to hook it up to your TV and play back those spontaneous video clips.
Keep in mind, however, that this is an early sample and specs (as well as performance) could change by the time the N8 debuts in Summer. For Nokia's sake, let's hope they do.
