Meet the Asus Transformer Book T100, a Two-in-One Ultraportable Traversing Intel's Bay Trail Platform
Asus is certainly making its presence known at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco this week. One of the more exciting announcements to come out of the Asus camp is that of the company's new mobile products built around Intel's Bay Trail platform, including the Transformer Book T100 with detachable display.
"The Asus Transformer Book T100 is the perfect transformation of the Eee PC with full compatibility, detachable touch screen, immersive entertainment, and enough battery for all-day computing," said Asus Chairman Jonney Shih. "It is truly a game-changer for our mobile lifestyle."
Those are big words, and Asus backs it up with a 10.1-inch form factor billed as an ultraportable (not an Ultrabook) powered by an Intel Atom Bay Trail-T Z3740 quad-core processor. It also rocks a 1366x768 resolution, an IPS panel with multi-touch support, Intel HD Graphics, 2GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of internal storage (plus Asus WebStorage in the cloud), 1.2MP webcam, micro USB port (supports charging), micro HDMI output, microSD card reader, stereo speakers, a multi-touch touchpad, and a few other odds and ends.
On the software side, Windows 8.1 is running the show. It also ships with Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 with full versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
Combining Bay Trail with a 31Whr battery, Asus claims its Transformer Book T100 can last up to 11 hours on a single charge. Asus also claims the T100 is one of the lightest ultraportables around at just 2.4 pounds, or 1.2 pounds if wielding just the display as a tablet. Good stuff.
Moving on, one of the other products Asus unveiled is the Transformer Book Trio powered by a 4th Generation Intel Core i7 4500U processor (Haswell) in desktop mode, and an Intel Atom Z2760 (1.6GHz) in tablet mode. The appeal here is that it can function as a tablet, laptop, or desktop PC all wrapped up in a single design (hence calling it "Trio").
When docked, the Trio can instantly switch between Windows 8 and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean by pressing the dedicated "Trio" key on the keyboard. Data is shared between the two OSes via the tablet's built-in storage, and unlike other dockable ultraportables, Asus says the Trio's PC station is not dead weight when the tablet display is detached. With an external display connected via mini DisplayPort or micro HDMI, the PC Station can be used a a self-contained desktop PC with Windows 8.
The Transformer Book T100 will be available soon for $349 (32GB) and $399 (64GB). No word yet on pricing or availability for the Transformer Book Trio.
