LG Shelves Plans For Froyo-Based Tablet, Waits On Next Android Revision
Times change. Things change. Plans change. It's a fact of life, and even in the consumer electronics industry, the best laid plans can sometime fall off track. In recent months, Google stated that Froyo (Android 2.2) wasn't the ideal operating system for tablets. It was built for smartphones, and with companies simply dropping it onto tablets left and right, well…it leaves room for disappointment. Froyo was never built with a 10.1" panel in mind, and in early testing, we hear that it shows.
Rather than battle with Samsung's Galaxy Tab, LG Electronics has decided to pull the plug on the idea of introducing an Android 2.2 tablet of their own. A few months back, LG did indeed announce plans to ship an Android-based tablet, but now they are junking those plans as they wait for the next major build of Android. It's likely that Android 3.0 will be at least optimized for tablets given that they will have been on the market for so long at that point, and LG may feel better positioned to take advantage of the market by being first with an Android 3.0 tablet.
An LG official was quoted by Reuters as saying the following: "We plan to introduce a tablet that runs on the most reliable Android version... We are in talks with Google to decide on the most suitable version for our tablet and that is not Froyo 2.2."
Some are suggesting that LG will lose out on sales during the crucial holiday period because of this decision, but they may end up making up for it next year if they can really capitalize on an Android 3.0 tablet. Besides, we think we'll have our fair share of options come holiday 2010, anyway.
