Comcast's Alleged Filtering Inspires Other ISPs

The ongoing battle between pirates and copyright holders is gaining a new dimension: ISPs doing network-level filtering.

"Network-level filtering means your Internet service provider – Comcast, AT&T, EarthLink, or whoever you send that monthly check to – could soon start sniffing your digital packets, looking for material that infringes on someone’s copyright."

Comcast is already facing FCC charges over their alleged use of various filtering techniques, and the resolution of those charges may have some impact on how or if other ISPs filter.

Regardless of the outcome, it seems like ISPs might end up needing to upgrade their computing capabilities in order to effectively help combat piracy.
