Boxee TV Gets in Good with Walmart, the World's Biggest Retailer

Boxee TV, the current evolution of the intriguing Boxee Box set-top box, looks like a real contender in the anything-but-traditional-pay-TV media consumption market. The box is $99 and offers Internet streaming and built-in apps including Netflix, VUDU, YouTube, Vimeo, and Pandora (with more to come including Spotify, TED, and MLB.TV) in addition to dual tuners for OTA signals and basic cable, and $14.99-per-month unlimited DVR capabilities.

The product itself is compelling, but the Boxee folks landed a huge retail ally: Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, which will be selling Boxee TVs in stores (complete with a big display in the electronics section) and online. “We’ve partnered with the world’s biggest retailer, Walmart, to offer Boxee TV in all their US stores”, said Boxee in a blog post. “ Walmart was an easy choice since more than 100 million people visit Walmart in the US each month.”

Boxee is running some special offers; if you buy a Boxee TV now, you’ll get 3 months of free Netflix and No Limits DVR, 12 months of free DVR if you already own a (now obsolete) Boxee Box, a $5.00 VUDU credits for new subscribers, and a month of free Spotify premium. Further, you can get the DVR service for $9.99 per month for as long as you subscribe, if you buy a Boxee TV this year.

Note that technically, Boxee is calling all its DVR service a beta, and although it’s coming nationwide at some point, it’s only available in the 8 top TV markets for now.
