AMD Cuts Radeon HD 7990 Price by $200, Now $799 (or Less)
You may have noticed that AMD's Radeon HD 7990 graphics card is selling for less money these days. That's because the Sunnyvale chip designer issued a generous price cut to its flagship part, and the end result is that you can get your mitts on what was once a $1,000 card for around $700 or less. Shop around a little and you could save even more.
Granted, $700 is hardly cheap, but we're talking about a dual-GPU graphics card that's capable of performing like two Radeon HD 7970 cards when properly scaled (see our full review). Equally important, there's a value proposition at the $700 price point that didn't exist at the $1,000 mark.
Officially, AMD knocked $200 off the MSRP. We reached out to one of our contacts at AMD who confirmed the price cut.
"AMD has worked with its partners to enable an incredible US$799 SEP for the world's fastest graphics card, the AMD Radeon HD 7990," AMD told HotHardware in a statement. "In combination with the Never Settle Reloaded bundle, which provides 8 AMD Gaming Evolved titles right in the product box, the HD 7990 is the most amazing graphics deal in the market today."
While $799 is the new official MSRP, AMD's hardware partners are paying less, and as a result, street prices are lower too, albeit usually by way of a mail-in-rebate. One example is the XFX Radeon HD 7990, which is marked down to $699 after rebate on Newegg. It also comes with 8 free games courtesy of AMD's Never Settle Reloaded bundle referenced above.
A quick peek online shows several other cards priced around $730 street, though some SKUs have been spotted for as low as $630 (after rebate). Those tend to sell out quickly, however, so if you spot one and are in the market for such a card, you'll want to pull the trigger before it's sniped by someone else.
