10 Million People Are Paying For Spotify

Spotify has proven to be quite a popular streaming service since its launch in 2008, as the company announced today that it has reached 10 million paying subscribers. That’s 10 million people across 56 markets paying for the Premium level of the music streaming service that lets you find and play virtually any song on any connected device at any time; download tracks for offline listening; and enjoy it all with no ads and no contracts.

In the U.S., you’ll pay $9.99 per month for the privilege, although of course Spotify still offers a free option for plenty of users. There are 40 million active users total, in fact, that enjoy Spotify.

“We’ve had an amazing year, growing from 20 markets to 56 as people from around the world embrace streaming music. 10 million subscribers is an important milestone for both Spotify and the entire music industry,” said Daniel Ek, CEO and Founder, Spotify in a press release.

To mark the occasion, Spotify revealed some stats that are, frankly, rather surprising. The most streamed artist on Spotify is Eminem, while Rihanna is the most streamed female artist. The song that has been streamed the most on Spotify is “Wake Me Up” by Avicii, and the most followed artist is David Guetta. Five millions playlists are created every day.

Spotify says that it’s distributed more than $1 billion to rights holders since its launch.
