The creator of Flappy Birds is back with his latest game, Ninja Spinki Challenges!!, which features kawaii ninjas, bouncing cats, and killer fruits. Ninja Spinki Challenges!! is slightly less simplistic than its predecessor, but just as charmingly infuriating. Flappy Birds was released on May 24th, 2013 by Dong Nguyen. Nguyen found popular games like Angry Birds to be too complicated. So, he developed Flappy Birds in three days and used a character that he had designed for a platform that had been cancelled. By January 2014, Flappy Birds was at the top of the charts and Nguyen was making roughly... Read more...
Many game developers use the massive gaming expo PAX West – which is currently underway in Seattle – to unveil their latest wares. There is always some hot, new gaming footage to come out of the show that sparks the usual conversations about graphics quality, framerates, game mechanics, and the myriad of other things that make a good (or bad) game. One of the game trailers released last night, however, may spark a different kind of debate. And we’re not sure that’s a good thing. If you grew up in the ‘80s and ‘90s, you may remember that discussions about video games, and video game violence especially,... Read more...

Fallout 4 is finally here. Channeling its best 50's era paranoia and the allure of a warm, radiation-free bomb shelter, Bethesda’s newest RPG tells us doomsday prepping and cryogenics actually work—yay! Well, that is until they malfunction and you’re thrust topside to an irradiated, post-apocalyptic wasteland filled with vile mutated everything, all gunning and clawing for you.The world of Fallout 4 is a hostile place, much like Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 3 before it, though we’re glad to be back on the game world's radioactive soil, becuase it has been nearly a decade since the latter launched.... Sometimes I wonder if we should cook up a TMZ-style column explicitly for reporting on all the drama that transpires between AMD and NVIDIA. Today we’ve witnessed one of the first shots fired from one of those camps, on what’s poised to be a very heated battleground over the next several years: DirectX 12. Over the weekend press was handed access to one of the world’s first DirectX 12 benchmarks courtesy of Oxide’s Ashes of the Singularity. This isn’t a synthetic test like 3DMark’s API overhead feature test, but rather a true real-world benchmark using a pre-Beta version of the upcoming game. And... Read more...
If you followed this year's E3 -- particularly Bethesda's first annual press conference -- you still remember the wave of nostalgia and tech lust that washed over you when Fallout 4 director Todd Howard announced that for the low price of $119, you could secure your very own wearable Pip-Boy. Howard also emphasized that the upcoming RPG's Pip-Boy Edition would be very limited in quantity, and he wasn't joking. Bethesda's final allocation of Fallout 4 Collector's Edition bundles have shipped to retailers, and when they're gone, they're gone.  Correction: When they're gone, they'll inevitably... Read more...
A few days ago, news broke that Max Payne 3 would require ~35GB of storage space. That's a huge number; even Rage, released last year, came in at a hair under 20GB. If you've followed game development at all, you've undoubtedly come across figures showing how the cost of developing a next-generation title has risen at an geometric rate over the past 20 years. Up and to the right, with a business model driven right into the dirt. Much of that increased cost has gone towards creating art assets, with another sizeable chunk for hiring actors to do voice-over work. It's not a question of whether... Read more...
