Attention original StarCraft fans! Blizzard just announced that StarCraft Remastered will be available this summer in 4K. This release will also include the award-winning expansion, StarCraft: Brood War. Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime remarked, “StarCraft is a pure distillation of Blizzard’s DNA—its story, its balance, and all the little details reflect our long-running commitment to epic entertainment, and it’s been a staple in competitive gaming and e-sports for almost 20 years”. Before and After According to Blizzard, it has, “kept everything you love about StarCraft, but upgraded everything else.”... Read more...
Retro gaming made a major resurgence this past holiday season, with the release of Nintendo’s ultra-hyped NES Classic, a scaled down clone of the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Out of the box, the NES Classic has thirty preloaded game titles, though some recent hacks exposed a method for uploading more if you're willing to mess with it. That's all well and good, but if you weren’t able to get your hands on one this past holiday season -- like the majority of people -- getting your retro-gaming fix isn't happening any time soon, unless you fork out an unreasonable sum, paying hundreds to... Streaming is big business, and almost every developer and gamer wants in. For gamers, this couldn't be more true than with Blizzard's portfolio of games. Games like World of Warcraft and Overwatch are full of moments well-worth streaming, so in the latest version of Blizzard's own game client the company has built new streaming options right in. Unfortunately for many gamers, Blizzard's streaming platform of choice is Facebook. While Facebook itself would love for its own social network to become the de facto place for streaming, it's a website that tries to cater to everyone and everything and... Read more...
The Xbox One, PC, and Playstation 4 are definitely not all quiet on the western front. The Battlefield 1 trailer was just released and it is big, bad, and beautiful. Yesterday the concept art was leaked, but today we get the full trailer. The game is set in an alternate universe filled with WWI-era trench warfare, naval battles, and of course Zeppelins. EA Games and DICE stated, “With Battlefield 1 we set out to create some of the largest create, most dynamic battles in FPS history while continuing to tap into what fans love most about the franchise. One of the things that makes World War... Read more...

Bungie released the latest major Destiny expansion, The Taken King, about six months ago, and since then there's been little reason for advanced Guardians to keep on grinding. In December, we were treated to a cool racing mode called Sparrow Racing League, which offered 320 Light Level head/feet drops, and just this past Valentine's Day, a neat 2v2 PvP mode sweetened things up a well. Both the SRL and Valentine's Day modes were well-received overall, with many players hoping to see their return in the near-future. While Bungie hasn't admitted if (or when) those modes would come back, it has finally... Read more...
Batman Arkham Knight is here, and as we're sure most of you have heard, the game is no-longer for sale for the PC platform currently, due to a flood of performance issues. WB Games has pulled the title from store shelves, both physical and digital copies. Can you say “Holy botched game launch, Batman?” We usually don’t start a piece with such negativity. It's not the most engaging story setup, yet this time it’s really hard not to call a duck and duck, with regard to this release. If it walks like a duck... Well, you know the old adage, but is there more to Batman: Arkham Knight that might be redeeming... Read more...
EA took the wraps off Battlefield 4 this past week, offering players a chance to experience a taste of what the game offers via an early beta. We've spent time with the game, tested its early performance, and come back to report the findings. AMD, of course, has been talking up the Battlefield 4 combination with a vengeance, highlighting the features of its new Mantle API and close partnership with DICE, Battlefield 4's developer. At the same time, however, this is just a beta -- while we'll be checking performance and commenting on game changes, this isn't a full review of the final product.... Read more...
Earlier this week, we covered news that a California PS3 owner, Anthony Ventura, had filed a class action lawsuit against Sony, alleging that the company's decision to terminate the PS3's Linux support via firmware update constituted a false/deceptive marketing practice. While most PS3 owners never took advantage of the system's Linux capabilities, "Other OS" functionality is critical to the universities and institutions that have deployed PS3 clusters as high-performance compute farms. We talked with several project leads on the impact of Sony's decision, and what it means for low-cost supercomputing... Read more...
