If you’ve been anxious to dive into some officially-sanctioned Mario gaming on your iOS device, the wait is nearly over. Nintendo announced this morning that Super Mario Run, which was originally revealed by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto during the iPhone 7 keynote, will be available on the iPhone and the iPad beginning December 15th.

While Super Mario Run will initially only be available on the iOS platform, it will eventually make its way over to Android devices at a later date (hopefully some time during 2017). There will be three modes included in the game, all of which can be tried out for free:

  • World Tour: Run and jump through 24 courses spread across 6 worlds in a race to save Princess Peach
  • Toad Rally: Compete against players around the world in an effort to rack up the highest score as you gather coins
  • Kingdom Builder: Create your own kingdom using items purchased with the coins you’ve collected during Toad Rally challenges

If you want the full game with unlimited access to all three modes, you can make a one-time $9.99 purchase. Nintendo is clearly avoiding the annoying in-app purchase model with Super Mario Run, and we commend the company for going this route.

“The wait is almost over for a Super Mario game that can be played on mobile devices,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s SVP of Sales and Marketing. “Developed under the direction of Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Super Mario Run brings a new take on the series’ beloved action-platforming gameplay to iPhone and iPad for the first time.”

It should be noted that Super Mario Run obviously can't accommodate the control scheme used in older side-scrolling Mario games, or even the more 3D-centric versions that appeared later. Instead, it relies on one-handed play with Mario moving forward on his own while you’re tasked with tapping the screen to hop over obstacles and dodge enemies. And of course, there will be coins and power-ups along the way to as you make your way through each level.
