AMD Demos 45nm Native Quad-Core at Cebit 2008

HANNOVER, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AMD (NYSE: AMD - News) demonstrated at the CeBIT electronics exhibition its first 45nm quad-core chips running multiple operating systems and a range of processing intensive applications. The processors were produced in Dresden, Germany, in AMDs Fab 36 300mm manufacturing facility, using an advanced 45nm process co-developed with IBM.

Wow..I wasn't expecting this at all. If they can actually convert their Fab36 from 65nm to 45nm swiftly, they might hit their stated release date of 2H 2008. Finally some good news for AMD...But we'll have to wait and see how it unfolds. But this is definitely a good sign for AMD...They need it badly =D.

edit- Bah..I should of put this in the news section, what the heck was I thinking?..lol.

ya good news from AMD alongwith the latest 780 chipset which looks very nice . We need AMD back in the processor market .

Great.  They need to get these out asap.  Once Intel performs both better and for less money on all fronts, AMD will be in a heap of trouble.  I don't want them to be like VIA, ie not really a major factor anymore.

True, but I don't thin Shangai will hit market before the first extreme edition Nehalem's...It will completely slap aside intels 45nm offerings. I keep telling everyone that if AMD wants to make profit, they need to do so before Nehalem...But with the problems of their 45nm process and phenom..it likely won't happen. I expect Shanghai to be a better performer...But Nehalem will completely stop it's exposure to nothingness =(...

AMD's demo of 45nm is indeed good news, but the monster waiting in the closet on intels side is no slouch.

Ball busting performance. All the advantages AMD had are out the window....Nehalem will incorporate their new Quick Pather interconnect (similar to Hyper Transport), and a IMC (Integrated memory controller). Also, it's a completely new architecture...From what I've heard so far, the performance gains between Nehalem and core is massive, even bigger than Netburst to Core...And just to state,,,netburst to core was a pretty massive jump.

    wats integrated memory controller ?

and from what i read the gains are 1.2X to 2X over penryn . Nehalem is just Penryn with improved internal structure and less power consumption .

Sorry to state so but that's incorrect. Nehalem is a new architecture. Intel's "Tick Tock" business plan follows this trend...Tick is the new architecture, and Tock is a shirnk derivative of that architecture. Tock is Penryn...Nehalem will be the upcoming "Tick"...Which is a new native quad architecture (With scalability and the return form of hyper threading). It's not penryn enhanced...It's a reworked core architecture. It requires a brand new socket as well as chipset considering there is no more FSB, the Quick Path interconnect and IMC changes everything.

Nehalem will completely eliminate the need of a Northbridge...The memory interacts directly with the integrated memory controller instead of the FSB via the  northbridge...This improves memory bandwidth drastically. Which is why AMD has always had the advantage with bandwidth in the Athlon line due to their Hyper Transport and IMC. Nehalem is also a native quad design, it's no penryn....It may be based on the core architecture...but it is indeed a new architecture...that cannot be compared to Core/Penryn.

Any idea if the integrated memory controller is going to be linked to CPU speed like the AMD architecture?  Most of the Intel stuff can run linked/unlinked ATM.  I hear the opening price of Nehalem is going to be a first born child and signiture in blood?

From what I've read so far, it should be linked. Although I'm not necessarily sure how everything will roll out.

The first Nehalem will end up being an extreme edition, which always end up in the 1,000 dollar range. This will happen in Q4 2008, then 1Q 2009 will have the low/midrange which will be much more affordable. Although will still have to dish out on a new board, that will drive up costs as well =P.

really good news, one of the reasons core is anihilating amd is because its on a smaller fab, now amd performs MUCH better comparing to intel on the same fab so hopefully we will see amd rise again!

If it was the current Barcelona on 45nm, it wouldn't perform better at all. There are numerous issues that need to be worked out of the architecture....But with shanghai, if AMD has played their cards right, they should have a better performer if they fixed the flaws with the barcelona architecture. But it won't really matter much, Nehalem will be out before or at the same time...and it will steal the show from AMD...Consumers at that point that care about getting the best possible product will just end up waiting for Nehalem.

well even barcelona on 45 will see a speed boost due to less heat alone. amd will get back into the game, i personally blame amd being behind on its purchase of ati. seems to me like amd has too much on its plate now and cant control it properly.

Less heat won't do anything for the current barcelona. It would see a very tiny boost indeed by running on a smaller process...But Barcelona has so many issues right now that need to be fixed, and it seems they are in Shanghai....Heck, a current 2.7 ghz phenom still can't pass a q6600 in most applications/games...The Phenom is just unattractive atm..Shanghai might chance that, but nehalem will end up slapping it aside.

AMD will be competetive again... we just have to have faith.  And maybe it would help if people bought their products every once in a while, heh.  I really don't see them coming back if they have no revenue.

Well, buying AMD products is totally dependant on how they perform. Most buyers won't buy a lower performing product that is near same price as the higher performing product.

The difference between $150 and $200 is rather small in the minds of most folks (especially enthusiasts).
