    Apple Won’t Ditch Intel (Maybe)

Apple’s recent acquisition of P.A. Semi has started rumors of a PowerPC Mac revival.  On one side there are people claiming that it’s hard for Apple to justify Mac prices because the hardware is now more or less identical to what PCs run with EFI support.  The other side notes the drop in Apple’s product prices while the performance continues to increase.

So the real question is, where does Steve stand?

In an interview after Apple reported earnings Wednesday, Jobs told the Business Technology Blog that the company’s relationship with Intel, the provider of microprocessors for its entire line of Macintosh computers, is still strong.  “We have a great partnership with Intel,” Jobs said.  “We expect that to continue forever.”

There you have it, at least for now.

plus wasnt the company apple bought for low power consumption, ultra mobile processors? i dont think apple would want to develop their own cpu.

I wouldn't doubt that they would ever go back to powerPC but I don't think it will be immediate (in the next 5 years). One thing that apple has thrived on is bringing a drastic change to their lineup because of the hype it creates.

Has anyone seen that (fairly) new apple commercial with mac and pc sitting with a shrink. It makes me laugh every time because one of the claims they make is that all the hardware and software are manufactured by apple. It cracks me up, how can they even say that? I mean I guess to people who don't know better that sounds great but the reality is they are built the same as pc's with a different os..

This is my Sig. There are many like it but this one is mine.

    OIIIIIIIIO

It is normal that Apple still sticks to Intel since their own processors sucked

apple never made processors what you are refering to is the powerpc cpu's which were made by ibm.

I was reffering to the power pc cpu's by IBM.Apple used them for a quite while but switched afterwards to Intel.

yeah i figured you were refering to that, but you said apples own cpu's which they never had.

Smart choice! While i'm impressed by some apple products, i'm usually more impressed when there is an intel logo on the side... I realy wouldn't be comfortable looking into any other technologies unless it was something completely amazering that revolutionized technology (most likely not coming anytime soon).

what about amd? i think any "mainstream" x86 processor would be good for apple. if i see apple have both amd and intel id be highly impresed

I would love Apple to adopt AMD.  It would help their business.  That's one good thing about AMD aquiring ATi, since most iMac GPUs are still ATi and so are the GPUs of the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.  However, it would take a drastic leap in performance on AMD's part to justify them going into iMacs.  Otherwise it would be a step back in terms of performance.  I did find Jobs' use of the word "forever" a bit intimidating there.

To answer the question why I would rather see Intel instead of AMD inside of the apple computers :)

i agree, but it would still be nice to have that option. plus who knows maybe amd will suprise every one and unleash a powerhouse new architecture.

Its unlikely... new architectures don't just appear out of thin air. They have to be designed and engineered first :) Intel is not only the pinnacle company of computer engineering in the processor sense, they have more money, engineers, and capabilities for advancing their designs and ultimately, the performance of the processor. Not to mention Intel is currently far ahead of AMD as far as performance is concerned.

Lets just say, if AMD releases a new powerhouse architecture, not only will we be surprised, but i'm sure AMD will be surprised as well :)

well the 939 athalon, along with the socket a athalons were ahead of intel. amd at that time and intel stocks were over 2x as much. amd can still produce a powerhouse even if it is a smaller company.

I understand that, but my point is they are on a different track than Intel. Intel has all their upcoming architectures laid out and in development... they have been in the process of design for a long time.

AMD has nothing of the sort. They don't have 4 new chips waiting to be released within two years. The reason I'm counting them out is because with their few resources, it is nearly impossible for them to catch up to intel now that intel has taken over the market share in most areas.
