    Your graphics card history

I'm a nostalgic man for strange things, and video cards are one of them.  Remember when the GeForce 4 Ti4600 was king?  When the Radeon 9700 Pro came out of nowhere and took the top spot?  Good times, eh?

My first PC that was actually my own, was an old AST machine with I believe an ATI Rage 128 Pro.  Didn’t use this for long before upgrading.

Next, I got a custom built Celeron 800MHz with a GeForce 2 MX 200 16mb.  Ran the 98 PC game Battlezone pretty good.  But I upgraded it to an Elsa Gladiac GeForce 2 GTS 32mb.  This nice card ran Battlezone and Half-Life perfectly.

After upgrading to a Tualatin Celeron 1.3GHz, I got myself a GeForce 4 Ti4200 128mb.  This baby allowed be to use AA and AF in Counter-Strike!  W00t!  My first HotHardware post 6 years ago was a thread asking whether I should guy a GeForce 3 Ti500 or a Radeon 8500 128mb.  Thanks to recommendations, I went with a Ti4200 instead.  Thanks guys, it served me great for a couple years.:)

I later had a Pentium 4 2.66GHz system, and the Ti4200 did well for a while but I eventually upgraded my card to a Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb.  This served me well until I ran into Battlefield 2.  Needed more system and video ram, so I upgraded again.

Got myself an Athlon 64 3800+ with a Radeon X1800XT 256mb.  It allowed me to max out Battlefield 2.  I was even able to play BioShock all High at 1280x960.  But the Call of Duty 4 demo was a little stressful, so I upgraded to my current Radeon HD 3850 512mb, factory overclocked by Powercolor.  I can run games a lot better now, just don't expect Crysis at a high resolution.Stick out tongue

What’s your graphics card history?  I’m sure we have some Voodoo guys out there.

    Hello

Lets see if I can remember... I think it went something like this:

    Voodoo3 2000,
    Matrox G400 (I think),
    GeForce2 MX400,
    GeForce3 TI500,
    GeForce 6800 (vanilla),
    7800GTX,
    and currently a 7900GT.

I honestly don't know what my first GPU was. My first comp I bought was back in Jan of 2002 and I knew squat about it. A buddy upgraded my vid card to a geforce 2 which is still in the machine in my closet. When I first built my own I went with a 7800gt. Talk about a huge difference. I have installed several others in different computers but they weren't mine. I am still running my 7800gt but it is time for an upgrade. I played my first game last week that had to lower the settings due to lack of vid memory. It was empire earth 3.

I used on board graphics until Vice City came out for PC, then I upgraded to a cheapo GeForce 2 with 32mb.  Once I had purchased a new system, I sat with onboard graphics for a couple months while I saved some money.  It could play CoH without too much trouble at low settings.  I then bought an XFX 7600GT, and loved it.  Now I currently have an MSI geforce 8800gt, which was a godsend when it comes to crysis.

You had a 7950GX2?  Sweet.  Any driver issues?  If used properly it's almost as fast as an 8800 I'd guess.

    Re: Your graphics card history

I did indeed! No driver issuse at all, had it for about a year and a half! I suppose if I had bought it right at the time it was released there may have been some driver issues but nVidia soon sorted it! It was a very fast card nothing could touch it for a time, but my 8800GT is a shade faster about 15% id say! But my 8800GT is a factory overclocked version so id say against a stock 8800 the 7950GX2 would hold its own! All my mates were amazed when I showed them the GX2 like being in the presence of a god lol.

    My history is pretty short.

Some really old graphics on my old PC from 15+ years ago.

    Mobility Radeon 9000

    8800GTS 640MB

    8800GT 512MB

If you think you can’t do something, you’ll never be able to do it. No matter how easy it is.

    GeForce 2 MX 200 32MB - You have served me well [:'(]

Radeon  9200SE - After the GeForce 2 MX exploded. I can't believe this POS cost 80 dollars.

Radeon X1300 Pro - Still stuck in low-end hell.

GeForce 8600gts - Hey, it was cheap.

    GeForce 8800GT - LIBERATION!

    Re: Your graphics card history

Here's my history of where I started with graphics cards, before that just integrated crap on a 486: Voodoo2->Voodoo3->GeForce3 Ti500->GeForce4 Ti4200->GeForce 6600GT->Geforce 8800GTS

Very nVidia centric on my cards, I liked having good drivers. Not that there's much of a difference anymore but there used to be. And man did Diablo II run awesome on Glide... much better than DX.

    Re: Your graphics card history

There have been many...I will attempt to list most of them

    1. PCI 4MB 3D accelerator I convinced my grandmother to buy me when I was about ten years old for my Pentium 166 w/ MMX!, this was an upgrade from my ATI MACH64 w/ 2MB

    2. 4MB AGP nvidia riva 128ZX

    3. 3dlabs Permedia II I used on a 300mhz Pentium II system I had

    4. Found a GeForce256, the original, in a bargain bin for 5 dollars, awesome find for me...dont know why it was there becuase it hadnt been out long at the time

    5. Purchase a GeForce3 Ti500 which i used with great success until I ran in to Oblivion...There was a need for something else obviously

    6. Moved up to an ati x800xt big difference there!

    7. Currently running GeForce 8800gt

    Re: Your graphics card history

    Lets see.

    1. Nvida Geforce 3

    2. ATI Radeon 9700 Pro

I still have this card but the fan is dying so I had to upgrade it. This is one video card that you can safely tag as legendary.

    3. Nvida 7600 GT

    4. ATI HD3450

This is my current card but it's in a junk computer I'm just useing until I build a new system.

As you can see I am not loyal to ither ATI or Nvida but with this pattern it looks like I'll be buying a Nvida card next Big Smile  that is if when I go to buy my next one thay have the best bang for the buck card in whatever my price range will be.

I had computers before the Geforce 3 but I have no clue what their graphics subsystem, if any, was. My first computer was a TSR-80 then I got a Commodore 64 then a 286 , then a 486 then on to a Cyrex 200MHz.

I started out with a rage 128, then went onboard for several years. Once I discoverd pc gaming my next card was a pci Voodo 5 5000 that my g/f (now wife) bought me, not 2 month's before they went under. next was a prebuilt hp with an agp geforce 4 mx440, wich I upgraded to a bfg 6600 gt oc. That lasted me quite a while. Then I went to a pcie x800xl, and now have an 8800 gts640

This is my Sig. There are many like it but this one is mine.

    OIIIIIIIIO
