    Phenom Roadmap Updates

As with all rumors, please take the following news item with a grain of salt until we can receive official confirmation or denial from AMD.

As we've previously reported, AMD is rumored to be shipping their B3 stepping Phenoms, and it seems that we might see 2.5GHz models before April Fool's Day:

“AMD is planning to launch B3 stepping quad-core Phenom 9050 series CPUs including 9850, 9750, 9650, 9550 and 9150 within the next 1-2 weeks, however the top-end 9850 will only reach a core frequency of 2.5GHz, instead of the original goal of 2.6Ghz. The company expects to be able to deliver higher core frequencies in the third quarter this year, according to sources at motherboard makers.”

While a 2.5GHz Phenom isn't likely to wrest the high-end CPU performance crown from Intel, but it could certainly spark a decent performance/price battle in the mid-range if it were to come in at an affordable price point.

If you're waiting on Tri-Core Phenoms, you might have to wait a few additional weeks, but they're expected to be appearing on store shelves by the end of April.

And with this revision is there a chance for a bit improved efficiency/performace? or are the instructions still a semi-mess....

It's quite unfortunate for all of AMD's delays..Nehalem's Bloomfield will be pushed up to Q3...once people get a taste for Nehalem..They'll end up waiting for the mainstream release....AMD is definitely not in good shape for the cpu market. I predict Nehalem is going to completely sweep away the desire of Shanghai =(.

AMD won't go under..They'll continue to get investments from others in order to stay alive...Having intel alone in the x86 market is not a good thing =P.

AMD may not be capable of going toe to toe with Intel at the cutting edge of processors, but at least they can provide enough competition to keep the fire lit under Intel. If Intel had no competion I doubt they would be releasing new technology as swiftly and they would probably be charging more too.

Intel has magnitudes more money than AMD, this is why AMD is behind.  And buying ATI for the price they paid was a mistake.  A 2.5ghz Phenom will be a decent performer, but I wonder how AMD will be able to afford to sell it competively with Intel.  Still grey skies ahead for AMD.

That is true, AMD's R&D Funding, Staff, and Fabs are no where near the level of intel....Intel can easily dump hundred of millions into R&D that won't go anywhere and just scrap certain ideas...AMD doesn't have the pleasure of doing that. They need to make sure the idea they are going for is going to work and work well, they can't throw cash around loosely like the bigger intel =(.
