The drivers never did, nor now do, that.

People are blowing this out of proportion and implying nefarious intentions where there are none. Apparently nVidia's seeing PhysX bugs when their cards are used as PPU's in combination with non-nVidia GPU's. So, nVidia made the drivers disable PhysX support on the *NVIDIA* card if a non-nVidia GPU is being used... simply to avoid having to support a billion combinations for which nVidia can't possibly do QA testing.

That's it. They're not doing anything that pushes others out, they're making their own product less useful for the few odd people that may have mixed mfg cards installed, for the benefit of more focused support.

If someone wants to use a hack to re-enable mixed-mfg configs, more power to them. nVidia probably won't even do much to prevent this, since anyone using the hack would already be aware that they can't get any nVidia support for such a configuration.

RE: AMD ATI Radeon HD 5870 DirectX 11 GPU Review

I can't disagree (I prefer nVidia cards in my Linux boxes for the very reasons you cited), but the ATI situation is improving now that ATI opened up their docs (which nVidia has yet to do):

- 2.6.32 has open source kernel mode setting and 3D support for newer ATI cards.

- The 5870 should work with the already released 9.9 drivers, as opposed to the situation where I've bought a brand new nVidia card (9600GT) and had to wait over two months for them to release a proprietary Linux driver.

- The ATI drivers are performing more in line with their Windows counterparts nowadays. It used to be really atrocious though: I remember years back when I had a GF4400 and ATI9600XT card: On windows the ATI would win in the benchmarks... under Linux the ATI would run at about 1/3rd speed of the nVidia card.

So, if the trend of improvement from ATI continues, it's not improbable that we won't see the competition in the Linux sector get a bit tighter... with all the resulting consumer benefits. :)

Re: The New Xbox 360 Experience In-depth

They're calling it the Ion Pulse - but it isn't Nvidia's Ion at all.

With green being the flavour of the week - in more ways than one - Maingear chucked a Zotac mini-ITX coupled it with a Core 2 Duo or Quad (s-Series) processor and choice of single HDD or SSD storage. Memory is limited to two DDR2-800 slots, but Zotac says you could slip in a couple of OCZ's SLI-ready DDR2-1066, even though they aren't listed on Maingear's configuration options.

The twist is Maingear touts the Ion Pulse as having "upgradeable graphics", since the Zotac motherboard hosts a PCIe x16 slot where you can stick another of Zotac's 9600GT- or 9800GT ECO graphics cards. That way you can have graphics running off the discrete GPU (have cake) and PhysX processing on the mGPU (& eat it). Nice.

According to Maingear, total power consumption under load is under 145 watts, which equates to just about a little over a single Core i7 processor in full swing. The whole system weighs in at just 8lbs measuring a lilliputian 11"x7.6"x8.25". In typical Maingear fashion, the polished black case has been covered in cool techie schematics.

You can look it up on the Maingear site, the unit is available for shipping within 48-72 hours and starts at $800.

HP, Dell, Apple Owners Combine NVIDIA Lawsuits

Five different lawsuits, from owners of Apple, Dell and HP laptops have combined their lawsuits against NVIDIA over defective GPUs that were shipped in possibly millions of computers.

In some cases, OEMs have modified the BIOS in an attempt to keep the GPUs from overheating, but the change reduces battery life and performance.

NVIDIA admitted to issues earlier in July 2008, in and SEC filing, when it said it was taking a $150 - $200 million charge to cover (emphasis ours):
... anticipated customer warranty, repair, return, replacement and other consequential costs and expenses arising from a weak die/packaging material set in certain versions of our previous generation MCP and GPU products used in notebook systems. All newly manufactured products and all products currently shipping in volume have a different and more robust material set.
All three manufacturers have extended warranties for affected laptops, although as indicated above, HP and Dell both began with BIOS updates. The problematic GPUs could cause display corruption, or even fail completely.

What the plaintiffs want is for all the affected GPUs to be replaced in all of the laptops that were affected. As the text of the combined lawsuit (.PDF) reads:
Exacerbating matters, NVIDIA is trying to avoid a recall by having its OEM (“Original Equipment Manufacturer”) partners recommend consumers download and install a “BIOS update,” which turns on the computer’s fan more frequently or continuously. This is a grossly inadequate “remedy,” as it results in additional manifest defects, including, without limitation, further degraded battery life, system performance and increased noise in the Class Computers. Worse, this “remedy” fails to solve the actual problem. Instead, this measure only ensures that the Class Computers will fail after the OEM’s express warranty period expires, potentially leaving consumers with a defective computer and no immediate recourse. Finally, even after using this purported “update,” video and system performance is still degraded due to unacceptably high heat and part failures.
The plaintiffs are seeking class action status for the lawsuit, and and if the suit is successful, that NVIDIA replace the faulty chips and pay unspecified damages.

I wouldn't bet against seeing cards that make this truly practical within the next four or five years.

RE: NVIDIA's Bill Dally Joins In The Intel Hating

Person of authority at company bashes said company's competitors.
Though it consumes a bit more power and requires an 8-pin PCIe power connector, as well as a 6-pin plug, we're seeing GeForce GTX 280 cards from BFG filtering into certain etailers like NewEgg at the $279 - $259 mark...

It also looks like the package that comes with the offering at NewEgg, also includes Call of Duty World at War, to help you stretch your new found frame rate running legs a bit. Get there soon if you want in!
