It didn't strike me as being wildly different from the first one though (which isn't a bad thing).

It seems to play fine under Wine 1.1.32 in Linux, with all effects turned to high and shaders at very high (I was playing in 1360x768 windowed mode). I did notice a glitch where the sun and fire are occasionally being visible through walls, but it doesn't negatively affect gameplay.

RE: VMare Fusion 3 Allows Even More Windows 3D Games To Run on Macs

VMware's 3D support is actually pretty good. I remember trying it on Linux a while back, and games like CounterStrike Source looked great.

Another option: VirtualBox. VirtualBox is free software (but as with VMware, you still need a licensed copy of Windows) and has 3D support via shared code from the Wine base. This won't get you any better 3D support than Wine has, but overall compatibility can sometimes be better since you're using the native windows DLLs and kernel, instead of the Wine re-implementation.

I wrote up some info about all of the options in this arena and put it at https://dusk.homelinux.com/cross-execution a while back.

RE: Intel Launches New TV-Oriented SoC; Predicts TV Revolution

>> The fusion of the Internet and television, once thought to be as natural as peanut butter and chocolate, has proven to be a tricky problem for would-be content producers.

I'm pretty sure that I know why that is: Every "product" has concentrated on how to make the most money off of the consumer instead of giving the consumer the most value possible. I'm not incredibly inclined to buy a product whose DRM cripples all the features that are new and innovative.

Now... on to TransGaming: Though the article doesn't say it, this implies that the new Intel systems will be running Linux (TransGaming has also done Mac stuff, but that doesn't lend itself as readily to embedded systems). TransGaming forked Wine long ago and produces a version that is full of their own hacks and improvements.

My experience with TransGaming wasn't the best, so I would recommend CrossOver or plain Wine before them, but I wish them success in their endeavor for the sake of the customers. More so, if any results actually make their way into the Wine tree.

Re: Dungeons & Dragons Online Free Option.

Thanks for the info! I think I'll take a peek at it this weekend too.

RE: Left 4 Dead Free To Play Via Steam This Friday

I was excited, so I tried it under Wine.

It worked perfectly.

But, as it turns out, THAT GAME SCARES THE HELL OUT OF ME.

Coming from a guy that's laughed his way through every Romero flick, that's somewhat of a ringing endorsement I suppose. But no way am I going to buy it: more fun to laugh at zombies from behind a counterstrike barricade while I mow them down with unlimited ammo.

Re: Orange Box $8.00!

Okay... at $10, even I couldn't resist buying it. I'll probably only ever use it to test for Wine regressions, but maybe the kids will play it. :p

Here's one thing I didn't know about Steam: If you buy a bundle package like this, and you already own some of the games (I already owned HL2, because it came with a video card I bought ages ago), steam allows you to "gift" a copy of that game to another account. So I gifted HL2 to my wife's steam account and kept all the other stuff on mine.

I still don't like that you can't use multiple games from the same account concurrently on two computers, but I guess they don't want groups of friends to create "lending library" style accounts.

RE: Ubuntu Linux 9.04 'Jaunty Jackalope' Out Now

Also of note to Windows users: The installation CD includes Wubi (http://wubi-installer.org), which lets you install the entire OS into a directory on your existing Windows partition from within Windows (just put the CD in the drive with Windows running and follow the installation prompts). And it's easily removable if you ever want the space back - just remove it from the Add/Remove window like it was a Windows app!

It's a great thing to have, even should you just need it to troubleshoot Windows system problems - I used it to download wifi drivers for the NIC in my kids PC when Vista didn't recognize it upon installation.

Which version of Wine are you running, and did you install the MS core fonts? I do not have the same issue, using the latest Git. I restored the .wine directory I had been using in my 8.10 setup, but there was nothing too special about it.

Maybe give winetricks (http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks) a try: Use it to install all the available font packages and then restart wine completely (wineserver -k).
