It's no surprise that businesses aren't touching it with a 10 foot pole, since it offers no benefits and a ton of re-training hassle. I always thought they should have taken more risks, but this was not the right product or time to take that risk.

Hopefully, this is Ballmer's death knell. Microsoft should have shown him the door 6 years ago, and tried to reinvent themselves then. Within 3 years, Microsoft's going to be completely different and relevant, or just suing everyone over obvious software patents and dying.

If they're serious about making it a success, this is something they're going to have to put a ton of money into and hope it eventually takes before Mac and Linux steal a significant share of their users. I expect to see a ton of new Win8 advertising in the coming months, and I would not be surprised to see a significant service pack pushed out very soon that makes the UI a little more intuitive and appealing to previous Windows users and businesses.

That, or we'll see Windows 9 about this time next year.

RE: Samsung Series 5 Chromebook Now Shipping, Are You In?

I have one of the beta CR-48's. If you're intimidated by Linux, and even Windows, but comfortable with a phone or web-browser... the Chromebook may be for you. If you're a tech-geek, like pretty much everyone here... you're at least going to want to dual-boot an OS that gives you local apps (as you're probably not needing the "BIOS will re-image you if pwn'd" feature anyway... especially if you're a user of a different Linux flavor).

I give kudos to Google for sticking their neck out on this one. I wish them lots of success, but I don't see the market being significant (though I travel in IT-literate circles). At least, I don't see a significant market at the price-point their partners are setting.

I've managed to not switch my unit into dev-mode or do anything untowardly all this time, so that I could give them good feedback... but it's killing me. I think I'm going to make this thing dual-boot Ubuntu 11.10 next weekend.

RE: Nokia Predicts Fast Falling Prices for Windows Phone 7 Devices

>> The thing is would the software spectrum be where it is today without them, and or the PC world as we know it today, the answer again is no it would not.

I agree. I think we'd be much farther ahead of where we are without Microsoft.

What happened to IE once Netscape was forced out of the picture? What happened to Media Player once RealMedia was made redundant? Windows became stagnant while free operating systems have caught up with and passed it in terms of functionality. Great... we'll be able to run full-blown Windows 8 on ARM devices... We've been doing that with Linux for only the last 11 years or more.

Every product Microsoft makes (with the potential exception of Office) was made "just good enough" to be seen as equal to an alternative solution that they ran out of business with sweetheart tie-in agreements. Once Microsoft owns a market, they let it rot while they move into another market. Only free alternatives that they can't kill, like FireFox, have been able to jar them to occasional action.

>> in the long run we all benefit, whether we like it or not.

Yeah, we'll be able to buy OS upgrades for our phones for the low low price of $120. Actually, we'll probably just never see our cell bills go down, since Microsoft will charge us each month with negotiated payments from the carriers (that we'll have to pay even if we want to use a different OS on our phone).

I'm just not seeing the benefit of being a Microsoft supporter for the end user when they use their money, overly general patents, and distribution deals to run everyone else out of the market rather than competing on features. We benefit from competition, not manufacturer deals that kill off
competition (Meego). I'll bet more than a few people are frightened
about what Elop might do next, to sabotage Qt.

RE: Microsoft Sues Motorola Over Android-Based Smartphones

>> "We have a responsibility to our customers, partners, and shareholders to safeguard the billions of dollars we invest each year in bringing innovative software products and services to market."

Should read: "We've never created anything innovative, ever, and now that our monopoly is is slipping from our grasp we're going to resort to the underhanded legal tactic of suing everyone for the most obvious 'innovations' we could patent after seeing the Apple Newton in 1993."

Anyone who thinks that Motorola and/or Google had to sit down and read Microsoft's patent portfolio in order to design their featureset is deluding themselves. The fact that the features were developed independently makes them obvious (to a person skilled in the field) and therefore non-patentable. Unfortunately, our patent office is so broken that they've resorted to rubber-stamping everything.

Microsoft rails against this misuse of patents as bad, when another company owns the patents, then uses them in this hypocritical manner. I hope Motorola fights MS and has their patents thrown out. In a perfect world, all software patents (but not copyrights) would be thrown out.

Microsoft obviously has a very premeditated plan of how they're going to scuttle Android through lawsuits and FUD in order to get manufacturers to use their lesser-capable Windows Mobile 7. This is a perfect example of how they continue to be harmful to innovation and choice for us consumers.

"The effect of patents and copyright in combatting Linux remains to be investigated." - Internal Microsoft Confidential "Halloween II" memo - 1998

RE: Android Apps Caught Sending Private Data to Advertisers

Odd that the original article comes from MSnbc, eh?

When did Skype ever do that? Skype is closed-source software.

So, was the openess when they secretly added code to the Chinese version that reports dissidents to the government and accidentally left the collection server wide open for all to see? Or was it their use of an undocumented proprietary protocol that prevents open interoperability? Or was it when they were found guilty of violating the GPL by taking open source Linux code and not disclosing (potentially modified) source?
