• RE: Hey Linux Gamers, Would You Like Some Steam with Your WINE? Valve's On It

Hey Bob. Yeah, I'm excited. I've just been hard at work and not much time to swing round. :) The title of the article here is a little bit misleading to people who know what Wine is. This code is 100% native - like the Mac ports, no use of Wine at all. To those who don't know: Wine's...

  • RE: Intel Insider: Hardware DRM At Home In Sandy Bridge

    >> Google 'World of Goo piracy.' WoG is an indie game that got rave reviews, sold for less than $20 when new, and contained absolutely no DRM. The piracy rate was north of 90%. >> When you're facing a piracy rate that high, a DRM solution that can lower the rate to 85% from 90...

  • DirectX10 and 11 on Linux

Luca Barbieri just committed a DirectX state tracker to Gallium3D. http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/commit/?id=92617aeac109481258f0c3863d09c1b8903d438b This means that programs on Linux can pass DirectX 10, 10.1 and 11 calls directly, without the overhead of converting them to OpenGL first. The...

  • Alien Swarm

Don't know if anyone else (except Bob) noticed yet, but there's another free game out on Steam today: Alien Swarm. Bonus: It appears to work under Wine with no issues.

  • Re: Wine 1.2 - Released!

I installed the "Games for Windows" package within Wine, which included the native xlive.dll DLL just to see if it was an easy fix, but found another thing about Dirt2 that sucks: It uses SecuROM DRM. There's already a bug open for adding SecuROM support , so I'll just wait until that's...

  • Re: Wine 1.2 - Released!
Does it work with a lot of the newer games? And how much of a performance hit can be expected between wine and windows?
Yes, it works with the majority of Windows apps nowadays. I currently have 28 games installed in Steam, and only two of them do not work yet...

  • Wine 1.2 - Released!

Hey guys, just thought I'd share the good news: After two years of constant development, 23,000+ changes (no joke), and 7 release candidates, the second release of Wine is finally available. *Announcement and release notes are here* This is another great milestone for Linux users that like to play...

  • Re: Counterstrike Source Overhaul

Yeah, I'm hoping the same thing but trying to keep my expectations in check. Valve's silence (rather than outright denial) plus the partially-functioning alpha version of Steam for Linux found on their site shows that at least they're considering it. They probably don't want to commit...

  • Wine 1.2 Release Candidate now out!

Every day, I update my local git source repository and compile/install the latest Wine, to check out the new changes and keep an eye out for regressions. Imagine my surprise yesterday when I saw they bumped the version number, up to Wine 1.2-rc1. The official release statement is at: http://www.winehq...
