For normal partition tasks, I just use qtparted from any LiveCD. I think Knoppix has it installed by default, so you don't even need to remaster. If you want a great tool for recovering deleted partitions/files, check out the (totally free) TestDisk utility . I used it on a dual-boot Linux/WindowsXP...

I'll second Bob on this. VLC is my favorite player too. Every once in a while you may run into an odd/broken file that it can't play. In that case, MPlayer is a good choice. When using any Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu flavor, it's a good idea to check out the codecs available from Medibuntu too...

For an Microsoft Office replacement, you should just install OpenOffice.org. Most Linux distributions already have packages in their repos (you don't have to go different websites to download software with Linux, you just use the built-in package manager and it downloads/installs everything for you...
