As I mentioned up there, I replaced the motherboard and had the same issue. The problem is now gone though, and I'm on the most up-to-date Lucid build. The problem seems to be caused by a conflict between the proprietary non-open nVidia drivers I was using and Xorg 1.7.5. I can't be entirely...

Gotta agree with the others. Unless you specifically need the X-Fi for some reason, try out the on-board audio and see if it's suitable. You can always add the X-Fi later down the road. I'm biased against that card myself, because Creative mismanaged the Linux support at every turn and it's...

Xorg 1.7.5 seems stable so far. I'm going to give it until this weekend, then I may bite the bullet and put the 2.6.32 kernel on it. I'm still suspect of the KMS changes. I have scripts that can put everything back from tar files, but I think I'll use the opportunity to also play with Clonezilla...

Hey all! I was hoping the hardware gurus here might tell me if they have seen any similar problems, or have further ideas for troubleshooting that I haven't yet pursued. I'm more of a software guru, so I'll seriously pursue any suggestions. I apologize for the length of this in advance, but...

The way Bob's suggesting is actually pretty easy... It sounds more complicated than it is. I was going to suggest the same, but was waiting for someone to suggest a "Windows-way" so that it wouldn't just sound like I was promoting Linux (again). :) As a shortcut to learning how to mount...

Boot from any Linux LiveCD, copy off any files on it you need, then open a terminal prompt and enter dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX BE SURE TO REPLACE 'X' in the above line with the proper letter. If in doubt, unplug the thumbdrive, plug it back in, wait a second and type "dmesg | grep sd"...

Hmmm... that's kind of weird - it looks like it's saying your /tmp path is mounted read-only. It might just be a security issue though - did you use 'sudo'? Reboot the VM, use the "Devices/Install Guest Additions" menu option to mount the additions ISO (if it isn't already...

The only problem I see so far is that at login/logout, the screenmode doesn't always change to the proper mode for gdm... so you get garbage instead of the login screen. I'll probably do some more testing and file a bug against the VBox video driver for it. Here's the workaround for that...

Also, it does indeed look like Compiz works under 3.0: Just make sure you install the Linux guest additions, then you'll be able to turn it on under appearance.

Hey Bob, I decided to try installing from the latest daily Ubuntu LiveCD myself, to see if I could recreate your problem. The good(?) news is: I did run into an installation-stopping issue, but I found a way around it. It looks as if Ubiquity may have some new bug related to ecryptfs. This caused the...
