For normal partition tasks, I just use qtparted from any LiveCD. I think Knoppix has it installed by default, so you don't even need to remaster. If you want a great tool for recovering deleted partitions/files, check out the (totally free) TestDisk utility . I used it on a dual-boot Linux/WindowsXP...
