That's actually pretty cool. I like that they make these kind of improvements, even when there's probably no one clamoring for them. Resting upon laurels in the absence of real competition is a prime reason many products aren't any better than they currently are.

I don't think there are enough people using both Google Reader and Google Talk together. but i guess that could change with Google Talk's new AIM interoperability. Also there are ways to make Google Talk work with yahoo, msn & icq but they require you give your passwords up.
