We’ve had more than one look at Unreal Engine 4 demos, and they look amazing; with the upcoming Unreal Engine 4.1 update, though, Epic is adding support for more platforms.

“We have good news for you! The 4.1 source code has initial support for running and packaging games for Linux and SteamOS. We love Linux!”, wrote Epic’s Mike Fricker in a blog post. That’s good news for the gaming ecosystem at large.

Epic will also henceforth be rolling out regular Unreal Engine 4 updates, including hotfixes, new content, general improvements, and more. Regular engine preview builds and live source code access are in the offing, as well.

Unreal Engine support for SteamOS and Linux

Finally, Epic also announced that it’s giving away the very cool Elemental demo; it will now be free from the Marketplace for all subscribers.

I am not sure I realized that UE4 didn't even have Linux support up to now. Epic has been one of the few to provide Linux support on its engines for quite some time. Glad to see it is being taken care of this generation, especially with Crytek announcing not long ago that it's going to be supporting the OS.

Is Valve going to do something new and exciting with their own Source Engine? Will we ever see Half-Life 3 or Team Fortress 3?
