As if GIFs weren’t taking over most corners of the Internet already, popular social site Pinterest officially supports them. Starting now, you can post GIFs to Pinterest and play or pause them in their spot on a board or on the main page.

“The well-timed GIF may be the greatest thing to have happened to the internet since emoticons,” wrote the company in a blog post. (Eh, that’s debatable.) “There are already tens of millions of GIF Pins and a million people a day see at least one GIF on Pinterest, so there are plenty to choose from.”

A quick search for “GIF” on Pinterest, though, reveals an awful lot of One Direction. That can’t be good.

So many One Direction GIFs...

Lest you be concerned that your Pinterest boards will suddenly be filled with Harry Potter-style moving images, each GIF will appears as a simple image with a small “play” button in the lower left corner, and that button will be labelled as a GIF.

Up to now, if you wanted to play a GIF on Pinterest you had to click a link to see the GIF elsewhere instead of viewing it on the site itself. Mobile GIFs aren’t supported yet, but Pinterest says that functionality is coming soon.

so this is why all the fashionistas I know are asking questions about animating images? Go Figure, welcome to 1995 Pinterest.
