Apple’s intriguing cylindrical Mac Pro will be available for purchase starting tomorrow. The black trash can-looking computer is a stark departure from the norm in terms of form factor, and despite its many high-end components, the premier feature is the Mac Pro’s unified thermal core that uses a single fan to push all the hot air generated by said components up and out.

The chassis is surprisingly miniscule, measuring 9.9 inches tall, but the diminutive size belies serious hardware inside. The Mac Pro boasts 4-, 6-, 8-, or 12-core Intel Xeon processors; dual workstation-class AMD FirePro GPUs; PCIe-based flash storage; and RAM with up to 60GBps bandwidth. The machine has six Thunderbolt 2 ports on board that support a total of 36 peripherals.

The base configuration is $2,999 and offers a quad-core Intel Xeon E5 (3.7GHz, 3.6GHz Turbo), two AMD FirePro D300 GPUs (2GB each), 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of flash storage.

Apple hasn’t had a lot of sizzle lately in terms of its designs, but (at first blush, at least) this Mac Pro shows off the kind of thinking that made Apple such a dynamic and powerful company.

Props for design but what separates this from a windows workstation that's cheaper?

Oh look, a pretty much unupgradable and grossly overpriced desktop PC. Can't wait. Nope.

Awesome new Mac coming tomorrow, I'm definitely gonna go see it in a store. If I had the $$$ I would get one!

Innovative? The real innovation will come when it's capable of doing more than giving hipsters hard-ons and bankruptcy.
