Gilded phones seem to be all the all the rage lately, with Apple having released a gold colored iPhone 5S and Samsung reportedly following suit with a golden version of its Galaxy S4 device. Well, it looks like gold fever has struck HTC as well, though unlike its two aforementioned competitors, HTC is planning go all-out with its golden makeover.

HTC's U.K. division today announced the release of the Gold HTC One using real gold. The company produced the handset to celebrate the 18th anniversary of the MOBO Awards, and the winner of the Best Newcomer category will receive one of these limited edition (and very expensive) handsets.

There are only five Gold HTC One phones in existence, each one valued at £2,750, or a little more than $4,400 in U.S. currency. HTC says it's the most exclusive and expensive phone it's ever created.

Goldgenie founder Laban Roomes helped to craft the device. The front and back of the handset is plated in 18ct gold, polished for a "sophisticated finished," and then adorned with a special MOBO 18 logo laser etched on the rear.

"The best artists have always been given gold discs to celebrate their success, but today most people listen to music on their phone. We wanted to celebrate that fact," Phil Blair, HTC President for Europe, Middle East, and Africa, said in a statement. "he award winning HTC One is the gold standard in mobile design and innovation, so it was an obvious choice to make it even more special. We're sure the winning MOBO artist will love their unique phone and we will even be giving a lucky member of the general public the chance to get their hands on one soon too."

If you want to help decide which artist gets a Gold HTC One, you can cast your vote for Best Newcomer on MOBO's website.

I don't like gold-colored mobile devices to begin with, but I admit to liking the fake gold of the 5S over this real gold phone.
